Sing for sass to raise money for charity

A special gig is being held in Plymouth to raise money and awareness of pancreatic cancer.

The Sing for Sass event is being organised by Katie Eldrin and Charlie T-Curtis, friends and colleagues of 43-year-old Sarah Glenville, known as Sass, who was diagnosed with the illness last October.

The mum of one, who worked full time as a utility arboricultural surveyor for green spaces company Glendale at its Redruth location, discovered she had pancreatic cancer after being admitted to hospital for jaundice and undergoing tests for gallstones.

After three months of chemotherapy, Sarah was given the news that the treatment had failed, her cancer had doubled and spread and that her condition was now terminal.

She said: “I never suspected that I could have had anything like cancer when I was first admitted to hospital, I even felt lucky not to be as ill as some of the other people on my ward, so it was a real shock when I found out that I did.”

Pancreatic cancer in women of Sarah’s age is still quite rare, and Sarah hopes the Sing for Sass event, which is taking place on May 31, will help to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund to enable it to find out more about the disease and improve survival rates.

She said: “There is still so little known about pancreatic cancer that I felt it was important to help try and raise awareness and so I was really pleased when I heard that my friends were planning to put on the event.  I really appreciate all the hard work they’ve done to organise it.”

Performing on the night will be a whole host of local bands, who have all agreed to play for free. These include Crowley’s Tears, Propeller, Flood, The Thirty 8s, Star Kickers, Walking with Spiders, Plymouth Ukelele Players, Mother’s Ruin, Sam Doel, Bare Bones and Jamo Hope.

One of the organisers is Katie Eldin, she said: “We really wanted to show our support for Sarah who has shown amazing strength throughout all of this, especially for her son, and thought the gig would be a great way of doing that and raising as much cash as possible.

“We’d like to thank all the bands who have agreed to perform and all those who have donated prizes for on the night itself, we’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of all those involved.

“I would urge as many people as possible to attend as its going to be a fantastic night for a really good cause.”

Sing for Sass takes place on May 31 at 7:30 pm at the Hub, Bath Street, Plymouth.  Tickets are priced at £4 in advance and £5 on the door.  There will also be a raffle on the night.
