Ryan Stokes- What a Glendale apprenticeship means to me

To celebrate the beginning of National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Ryan Stokes, a grounds maintenance apprentice who works on our contract with Birmingham City Council. We asked Ryan about his current role at Glendale and what he would like to do once his apprenticeship is complete.

1. What do you feel Glendale has done for you so far?

Glendale has helped me on the career path of my choice by providing me with on the job training and continual support from the management team and team members.

2. What do you think differentiates Glendale from other employers?

As this is my one and only employment I cannot comment on this. Previously I did voluntary work at Kingsheath Park.

3. What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship scheme with Glendale?

I enjoy both being able to work in a team but also having the opportunity to carry out tasks independently. The variety of work, tasks and responsibilities ensures that you learn something new every day. I enjoy the responsibility of carrying out the tasks in the City’s premier athletic stadium, Alexander Stadium, and I also enjoy carrying out the preparation and maintenance of the cricket playing surfaces. Furthermore, it’s great that Glendale gives you the chance to do further training courses, i.e. trailer & tractor training.

4. Do you think it is important for an organisation like Glendale to provide apprenticeship opportunities and why?

Yes because they provide a good pathway to access qualifications through practical training with good support.

5. Would you like to stay on with Glendale when your apprenticeship finishes, if yes, why?

Yes, I feel that I would be a good asset to the company and I like working with the people here. I would like to further my career and develop my training.
