Council honours Glendale’s role in award win

Leading green services company, Glendale, has been honoured for its community involvement, civic pride and horticultural achievements in Portishead, at a civic reception held by North Somerset Council.

Glendale, which manages parks and green spaces across Somerset as part of its partnership with the council, was instrumental in helping Portishead secure Gold at the Britain in Bloom awards.

Portishead was crowned overall winner of the urban community category in the South West and won the national Pride in Place award for its commitment to cleanliness, landscaping, street furniture and public art – which are all areas maintained by Glendale.

North Somerset Council held the reception at Weston-Super-Mare’s town hall in recognition of Glendale’s contribution, which involved working alongside local volunteers to deliver improvements including annual bedding plants, new floral displays and meadows.

David Hitchins, council chairman, said: “I wanted to mark the success of everyone involved in the In Bloom competition. It has been a real team effort and the fantastic results and recognition received is a testament to what can be achieved by working together.”

David Buckley, general manager for Glendale in North Somerset, added: “This really is fantastic news for the whole community as well as the Glendale team. Our partnership with North Somerset Council has gone from strength to strength since our contract began, a little over 18 months ago. In 2013 we retained all five green flag parks along with Gold awards for Weston and Portishead in the South West in Bloom competition. Portishead was awarded the best in the region which promoted them to the national competition in 2014.

“To maintain these standards again in 2014 and improve on the recognition received for Portishead with a national award is great and demonstrates that even with reduced maintenance budgets, services can be retained and quality improved upon when a Council, contractor and the community work together to deliver important public services.”
