Glendale Lewisham team leader raises £1,285 for charity

Glendale Lewisham team leader Steve McKeag has raised £1,285 for The Alzheimer’s Society by running the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon.

Steve, joined Glendale six years ago as a grounds maintenance operative and now works as a team leader at the Mountsfield depot.

Steve started his running career only a few years ago, he said: “I started doing some half marathons to challenge myself which left me feeling great.  They were a substantial achievement and I decided I needed to challenge myself even further, so I opted to enter the London Marathon.”

He trained intensively for the 26-mile race around Britain’s iconic capital altering his diet and his training regime in preparation.  Steve ran up to four times a week completing both 10 and 20-mile training runs in the weeks leading up to the event.

Steve chose to run the marathon for The Alzheimer’s Society after sadly losing his grandparents to the disease.  It is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with Alzheimers and other forms of dementia.

Steve completed the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 24th April in four hours and 49 minutes.  He said: “I absolutely enjoyed the experience and I can’t express how the supporters along the route really do help you make it to the end.  I was feeling the pressure by the 20-mile mark and found it quite a struggle until mile 25 when I managed to get a boost of energy for the final leg.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who sponsored me, including the fantastic team at Glendale.  The money raised is going to a really important cause that is leading the fight against dementia.”

Steve has already entered both the 2017 Brighton Marathon and the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon.  If his applications are successful he will be completing both races just two weeks apart!
