Glendale helps residents get back in the garden

A team from national green service provider Glendale have helped make gardening easier for residents at a sheltered housing complex in Nuneaton.

The garden area at Springdale Court is popular with the residents at the sheltered site, particularly with 73-year-old Reg Powell who, despite being blind, is known as the sheltered home’s ‘top gardener’.

Unfortunately, old tree stumps and a greenhouse that was difficult to access were making gardening a risky activity for Reg and the other residents.

Glendale was called in to make some improvements to the garden to make it safer for its users.  A team of three from Glendale’s local depot, Ryan Bradley, Lee Chilton and Mark Tipple, came to the aid of the keen gardener by relocating and raising the greenhouse in order to make access easier.  They also removed the tree stumps that were a trip hazard for visitors to the garden.

Barry Bolton, general manager at Glendale, comments: “Ensuring everyone has access to good quality green space is a key part of the work Glendale does, and we were pleased to be able to help Reg and the other residents at Springdale have safe access to enjoy the garden area.

“Gardening is a great activity for people of all ages.  It’s a great way of improving mental health by stimulating the senses, enhancing cognitive function and promoting physical health, and I’m personally delighted that we could help residents like Reg continue to do something they are so passionate about.”

Glendale have been working in partnership with Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council for nearly 20-years providing a range of services including grounds maintenance and arboriculture.
