Glendale helps Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to raise over £20,000

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice provided a new fund-raising Christmas tree recycling service across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, and North Nottinghamshire in partnership with several community-spirited local businesses including Glendale. The combined efforts of the local partners, businesses and volunteers helped raise an amazing £20,000 for the South Yorkshire based hospice.  Each donation Bluebell Wood received helped support their life-changing work as they look forward to making precious memories with local children and families in the year ahead.

For a small donation, the charity and its team of volunteers collected real Christmas trees from outside people’s homes and then with the help of the Glendale branch in Rotherham, recycled them in an ethical and environmentally friendly way. Each tree recycled helped Bluebell Wood be there for children and families across the region, providing invaluable financial support during these most difficult of times. Much of the charity’s traditional festive fundraising was cancelled this year, so they were urging people to sign up to help raise much-needed funds through this and other more creative fundraising ideas.

All the real Christmas trees that were collected were chipped and turned into compost, with some used to grow new trees and others used in the gardens at Bluebell Wood. There are 8 million Christmas trees sold each year in the UK Pine, Spruce and Noble Fir and an acre of Christmas trees provides enough oxygen for 18 people. It Is estimated that the cost to councils and the taxpayer of Christmas trees that are not recycled but go into landfill costs around £80 per tonne. This recycling service not only raised Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice much needed funds, but also saved the local council considerable funds in disposal costs.

Sally Baker, Regional fundraiser for Bluebell Wood, said: “We were extremely excited to launch our Christmas tree recycling service to make life that bit easier for people in the New Year. All people had to do was register their details, and we did the rest. None of this would be possible without the support of some amazing local businesses, so we’d like to say a huge thank you to all those who’ve helped us put the service together.”

A letter sent to Simon & all at Glendale Managed Services from Anna Gott Regional Fundraiser read. I am writing to say a huge thank you for Glendale’s incredible support of Bluebell Wood’s first ever tree recycle. We’re delighted to share the campaign raised over £20k for us, which we are amazed and over the moon with, particularly for our first year! Without the dedication of logistics support from both Glendale Rotherham & Selby, we would not have been able to carry out this service, particularly as you stepped in on last minute occasions with problems that arose. We appreciate the amount of time and effort which went into being able to help us. We would be delighted to work with you on this campaign next year and cannot wait to start future planning. For the families in our care, so many of whom return to the lonely days of shielding their children to keep them safe, we will be a light in the darkness. Throughout this latest lockdown, we will be providing end-of-life and emergency care, as well as respite care and short breaks, both at the hospice and in families’ homes across the region.

I really can’t put into words how much this means to our families who are understandably anxious about how they will get through the difficult weeks ahead. While there are many more hurdles to overcome, with kind-hearted people like you behind us, we’re very much looking forward to better times to come. We would be delighted to continue our relationship with Glendale throughout 2021.

Thank You letter from Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice
