2013 London Marathon

The 2013 London Marathon went ahead on Sunday 21st April.  More than 35,000 runners registered to participate in what was the 33rd marathon to be held in the city.

Adrian Wickham, Glendale’s Regional Director for the South East, and Peter Stubbs, Assistant Regional Director for the South East, were two of the 35,000 entrants.  They ran for the Lavender Trust and Breast Cancer Care.

The race began in Greenwich and twisted its way past the half way point near Tower Hill before finishing on The Mall.  Adrian completed the gruelling 26 mile route in 4 hours and 48 minutes.

“I didn’t get my target time,” Adrian commented.  “During training I was achieving 4:30 and I aimed for 3:55 on the day.  10 miles in my legs tired and the pace setters disappeared into the distance as I started to take advantage of the drinks en route.  However I did beat my personal best.

“I am going to run the Milton Keynes Marathon on the 6th May for Breast Cancer Research, just to improve my time!”

Peter Stubbs crossed the line in 5 hours 18 minutes due to a recurring back injury.

“I picked up a back injury two weeks before the race,” he commented.  “Unfortunately 12 miles into the race it recurred and I eventually limped over the line well below my target time.  I did look attractive in my pink tutu, though, which I wore to help raise funds for Breast Cancer.

“I am looking forward to running the Milton Keynes Marathon and am hoping to be injury free by then and beat my personal best of 4 hours and 15 minutes.”

Along with their fellow runners, Adrian and Peter wore a black ribbon on the day of the race in memory of the victims of the Boston Bombing.  All participants were also asked to observe a 30 second silence before the race commenced and London Marathon organisers donated £2 for every finisher to the One Fund Boston charity set up to raise money for the victims and their families.
