Our COVID-19 Response in Lewisham

The coronavirus pandemic has created numerous challenges for the people of Lewisham, and it is no different for the Glendale team. Although we have been forced to change how we work, Glendale is proud to continue providing services for the London borough.

Work Continues

At Lewisham, Glendale continues to carry out standard activities such as cleaning up litter and emptying bins, but our work has changed considerably.

Alongside grounds maintenance, our staff now focus on patrolling parks, cleaning down surfaces, informing park users about the government guidelines, posting signage on gateways, and checking that all locked and fenced off areas are still secure.

Changes to the Workplace

At Glendale, we are proud to continue fulfilling all our contracts and meeting clients’ requirements. The furloughing of staff has been kept to a minimum and some of our colleagues have proven their adaptability by helping in other areas.

For example, some members of our teams at North Kesteven were trained to help out with bin rounds; the team at South Tyneside undertook additional training and supported the council’s cleaning contractors to cover for staff shortages caused by the change to working practices.

One of Glendale’s contract managers shared their thoughts on our work during the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown:

“We have worked hard over the past 20 years to make our parks more accessible to the public. Lockdown has highlighted how important parks and open spaces are for all, for our physical and mental health. People are now free to visit during the week, when much of the maintenance work is done, they get to see the amount of work that goes into the upkeep of our parks”.

As well as members of the public, Glendale’s clients have also shown appreciation for our work during lockdown. Here is what the service group manager at Green Scene had to say:

“I thought I would drop you a line to let you know how impressed I have been with your team in Lewisham during the current situation.

“Darren Budden has led from the front along with Grzeg and Veira nothing requested has been too much.

“As is always the way I haven’t named everyone but my thanks goes to everyone including you of course.

It really is appreciated.”
