This month, Glendale is pleased to introduce Chris Wood, our Commercial Operations Manager for the North, who oversees the Midlands, Northwest & Scotland regions of the Commercial division. Chris plays a key role in keeping contacts on track, ensuring teams deliver quality work, and maintaining smooth day-to-day operations. His career journey and approach to leadership highlight a strong commitment to results and team development.
A Busy and Rewarding Role
Ask Chris to describe his work life, and one word comes to mind: busy! The industry demands constant attention, with targets to meet and unexpected challenges to tackle. “Each day throws up a challenge which needs dealing with that wasn’t planned or unexpected,” he explains. Quick action and close collaboration with the right people are essential to keep operations running consistently.
Enjoying the Results
Chris finds real satisfaction in seeing sites maintained to high standards. Carrying out site quality audits and arriving to find out everything in great condition is a clear highlight. Meeting monthly health and safety, financial, and quality targets is another source of pride. For Chris, these achievements reflect the hard work of the entire team.
From the Tools to Management
Operations have always been at the heart of Chris’ career. Starting on the tools while still at school, he moved straight into full-time work in the arboriculture industry. Over time, he progressed into grounds maintenance, moving from hands-on roles to management. Years of delivering strong results as a Contract Manager led to his current position as Operations Manager. “I have always strived to be as good as I can be and reach my highest potential,” he says.
Joining Glendale
A referral from a colleague first brought Glendale to Chris’ attention. After meeting with the Operations and Regional Directors, he felt a strong connection to the company’s values and vision. “It seemed a perfect fit at the time for where I was with my career and goals.” The chance to guide the Northwest region and make a lasting impact sealed the decision.
Learning and Progressing
Since joining Glendale, Chris has gained valuable experience, particularly in the financial side of operations. Budgeting and managing profit and loss accounts have become key parts of his role. Glendale has also supported his career growth, promoting him from Contract Manager to Operations Manager in recognition of his achievements.
Achievements and Challenges
One standout moment came early in Chris’ Glendale journey. Faced with significant challenges around the SAP audit, he led the turnaround and achieved a successful re-audit within three months, passing well above the 90 per cent mark. Recruitment remains an ongoing challenge in the industry, but Chris finds success stories in bringing new talent into the team especially rewarding.
Skills for Success
Chris believes an Operations Manager needs to be well-rounded. Understanding all aspects of the work and being able to help team members with any concern is essential. “Being able to help all your team with any queries or concerns is probably most important for me so that helps them succeed.”
Why Choose a Career Outdoors?
For those considering this line of work, Chris points out the benefits of an outdoor career. Working in and around nature offers clear mental and physical advantages. “This is great for the mind, and when the weather is good, it is even better,” he says. The active nature of the job keeps you fit and makes every day varied.
Chris’s story shows how dedication, adaptability, and a hands-on attitude can lead to a rewarding career. His journey from the tools to operations management reflects the opportunities available at Glendale for those ready to learn, grow, and lead.
