GLENDALE TO PROVIDE BIRMINGHAM WITH A UNIQUE WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICE

A pioneering green waste management contract has been awarded to green service specialist, Glendale, by Birmingham City Council.

Glendale, currently undertakes grounds maintenance for 2 districts within Birmingham City Council, and now the company will also manage the Council's new green waste recycling facility, situated in Bromford. The City Council already operates a green waste recycling facility in the south of the City, at Cofton Park, which is run by its own ‘in house’ Birmingham Parks and Nurseries organisation.

The facility will process green waste including foliage and shrub clippings produced from Glendale's grounds maintenance and that of other service providers in the city.

Glendale's Managing Director, Mr Nick Temple-Heald, commented: "It will be a seamless and complete green waste solution, as Glendale will ensure that the green waste collected from our grounds maintenance work will be reused as compost within the Birmingham area.

"With a planned capacity of 1000 tonnes in the first year, the added environmental benefit is that it should reduce landfill requirements"

Glendale will be investing over £100,000 in new recycling machinery and equipment, including Telehandler, tractor, shredder and Weigh Bridge. The company also plans to work with the Council to further develop the recycling facility.

Geoff Cole, Assistant Director for Parks, Sports and Events Birmingham City Council, said ." Birmingham City Council is pleased the provision of this new green waste site as part of a joint venture with Glendale will move toward the green agenda and make a significant contribution in Birmingham’s recycling plans”

The three-year management contract starts on 1 April 2005
